Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has defended Darwin Nunez‘s huge transfer fee after his previous comments about Manchester Unitedis then word-record deal for Paul Pogbag†
In 2016 United broke transfer records when they bought Pogba back from Juventus for £89 million, prompting Klopp to criticize the deal and claim he would never sign a player for such a high price†
However, he has been forced to swallow his words several times since then, with Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk in 2018 for £75million and Alisson Becker for £65million, while Nunez has moved to Anfield this summer for a fee of up to £85million. lb. a club record.
†[The transfer market has changed] a lot, of course a lot,” Klopp said during Liverpool’s pre-season tour.
‘Things like this happen. If you want to attract a striker as exciting as Darwin, that’s the market and you have to pay the price.
“I’ve said so many things in my life and life grabbed me later and showed me that my imagination was clearly not clear enough for how quickly life can change. That’s how it is.
“I forgot I said this, but everyone reminded me and then I thought, ‘Oh, okay, yeah…’. I’ve said worse things in my life, to be honest, but that’s one of them.’
However, Klopp was also keen to defend the money spent, reiterating that their expenses were offset by player sales.
He added: “Our situation is always the same, we try to level it somehow, the things we invest in the guys and in the players, we sell, it’s kind of that it’s not out of reach goes and it worked so far, but I know, I heard it right away.’
The manager makes a valid point, with Van Dijk and Alisson’s purchases financed by Phillipe Coutinho’s £142 million sale to Barcelona.
This summer the purchases of Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay cost £77million, but the Reds have generated £68million from the sale of Sadio Mane, Neco Williams, Takumi Minamino and Marko Grujic.
