Jurgen Klopp explains Liverpool’s move to ‘more serious’ form in Champions League win over Rangers

After a difficult start to the season, Liverpool boss moved away from his favorite 4-3-3 formation and named four attacking players in his Anfield lineup, with Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota all coming side by side Mohamed Salah.

The reward was a much improved rendering, with Trent Alexander-Arnold scoring a stunning free kick before Mohamed Salah doubled the lead after the break to put the result beyond doubt as the Reds rode to a 2-0 win.

With little time to prepare for the Rangers visit afterwards the exciting 3-3 draw with Brighton over the weekendKlopp was impressed by the display the hosts were able to make to put themselves in Group A in a good position to qualify for the knockout stage.

“A session [with new shape]not after we recovered physically from the last game,” Klopp told BT Sport.

“We told the guys how we wanted to set it up, I thought they did a really good job. We’ve had great moments.”

The Liverpool boss praised Alexander-Arnold’s role in the new form. “I have often said now that there is no problem with… [his] defend,” Klopp said.

“It’s just the way we play. At good times it’s useful to play like that – everything is fine, nobody is worried when Trent is pressing high and the ball is passed over his head. Joel [Matip]ibou [Konate] or Joe [Gomez] are there for protection and it’s all fine.

“When you’re not there, it looks like you’re being exposed. For today, we thought it made sense to take it a little more seriously.”

With a frantic series of games between now and the domestic break for the World Cup next month, which continued this weekend with a trip to Arsenal in the Emirates, it was crucial that Liverpool put on a confidence-building display.

They did just that, with Klopp particularly pleased that the way the goals scored kept technology from ruining the mood.

“It was exactly what we needed,” Klopp said. “We needed a super solid performance, top defense and everyone committed to a new formation.

He added: “We had enough chances, 2-0, I’m more than happy. Two fixed goals that I also love because you can celebrate them without waiting for VAR, that’s good.”
