William and Kate are reportedly keen to move into Adelaide Cottage on the Queen’s 665-acre estate so that he can be closer to his grandmother while taking on more royal duties as the monarch takes a step back from public life. It is clear that the Cambridges will be moving into their new home this summer.
An unnamed source said: “The whole family [is] very excited to move to Windsor not only because it will bring them closer [Queen Elizabeth II] but it’s a perfect happy medium that brings them closer to London than if they chose to settle full-time in Berkshire or Amner Hall.”
Amner Hall is the Georgian country house in Cambridge where the family feels most at home.
The source added: “Being in Windsor means they are just 20 miles from central London and Buckingham Palace and it’s a beautiful area steeped in history and such a special location to call home.”
William and Kate’s move from Kensington Palace to Windsor comes after the Queen moved to Windsor Castle full-time earlier this year.
The source told Us Weekly that the Cambridges will enjoy spending more time with the Sovereign, which celebrated its platinum anniversary in June.
They said: “George will have a lot more time with Her Majesty, as will the whole Cambridge family and that will be such a treat.
“They will gain as much knowledge as possible for the future and begin the adjustment period that will eventually lead to father and son becoming king.”
Another royal insider previously told the Daily Mail that the move is because William wants to be closer to the Queen while continuing to take on additional royal duties.

This is reportedly not least because he and Kate “want to do something different from the traditional model”.
Another source told The Sun that the family would like a “modest home” with Heritage-listed Adelaide Cottage fitting the bill.
They said the Duke and Duchess were adamant they didn’t want anything that was too flashy or that renovation or extra security was needed so as not to burden taxpayers.
Katie Nicholl told OK! magazine: “The Cambridge family will be going through a lot of changes in the coming weeks.
“In addition to moving to Windsor, George, Charlotte and Louis are ready to enroll in brand new schools, which is understandably a daunting concept.”
“But they are a very flexible family, so I’m sure they will welcome any new opportunities.
“Windsor is a place the kids already know, so chances are they will adapt very quickly.”
