Keir Starmer: Labor will be courageous in reform and national renewal

“We must be courageous in reform, reconstruction and national renewal. That is what the British people expect from a Labor government – ​​and we will deliver.”

Sir Keir will recognize the huge economic burden the next government is likely to inherit.

Britain’s national debt runs into the trillions and government borrowing reached £27.4bn last month, up £16.7bn year-on-year and the highest monthly figure for December since records began in 1993 .

Sir Keir will add: “Despite all the challenges we face, I remain optimistic about our future. I believe in our country, I believe in our companies, I believe in our people, I believe in our spirit.”

Sadiq Khan is expected to suggest that economic instability has hit Londoners particularly hard.

The mayor will use the conference to kick-start Labor’s campaign to see him re-elected to a historic third term.

“London gave me the opportunity to go from growing up on a council estate to becoming mayor of the greatest city in the world,” he will say.

“I was brought up to believe that if you work hard, you get a helping hand and you can achieve anything, but that basic agreement – what I call the London Promise – is under serious threat.

“Economic forces are rapidly eroding expectations that the next generation will be better off than the last.”
