Key quotes from the TV debate on the Conservative leadership campaign

T

he fights to succeed Boris Johnson faced each other in a second televised debate.

Here are some of the key quotes from the five remaining rivals in the Tory leadership match.

“I’d love to stand here and say, ‘Look, I’ll cut this tax, that tax, and another tax, and it’ll be all right’. But you know what? It will not. There is a cost to these things and the cost of higher inflation, higher mortgage rates, eroded savings. And you know what? This is not economics for nothing Conservative. It’s socialism.” – Rishi Sunak.

“I think the tax cuts I’ve outlined are not inflationary. I think people listening at home will watch us and discuss these issues. And it seems we are removed from the real problems they face, they need immediate action now, I don’t understand why Rishi doesn’t accept that.” – Penny Mordaunt.

“I heard Penny say on TV this morning that you’d be breaking one of my lines that the… Government may not borrow for everyday expenses. Look, it’s one thing to borrow for long-term investments, it’s quite another to put the day-to-day bills on the country’s credit card and we know how that ends. It’s not just wrong, it’s dangerous. And you know what, not even Jeremy Corbyn suggested we should go that far.” – Rishi Sunak.

“Rishi, you have raised taxes to the highest level in 70 years. That is not conducive to economic growth.” – Liz Truss.

“I think what we are seeing in the discussion that is taking place is that there are no easy options. There are no solutions, only trade-offs. When I worked at the Treasury it was always a choice between difficult option A, terrible option B or crazy option C.” – Kemi Badenoch.

“I may not be the brightest presenter on this stage, but I think my colleagues in Parliament understand when I work with them that if I say I will do something, I will do it.” – Liz Truss.

“My entire campaign is built around building a team. My now legendary campaign video didn’t show me at all, it was all about my colleagues and it was all about the country.” – Penny Mordaunt.

Whatever your responsibilities in that government, whatever your place in that government, Keir Starmer will hold that record against us in two years. We need to make sure we win conservative seats across the country, and even really good people gave credibility to the chaos.” – Tom Tugendhat on why the successful candidate shouldn’t have worked for Boris Johnson.

“We have a lot to be proud of. We’ve done Brexit, and what the Prime Minister did on Ukraine and on vaccines was fantastic. Serving in government is not easy. It requires making difficult decisions. Tom [Tugendhat] has never done that. It’s very easy for him to criticize what we’ve done, but we’ve been on the front lines defending the cause.” – Kemi Badenoch.

“What I would tell you is that all attempts to portray me as an out-of-touch individual will fail. I am the only person on this podium who has won and fought for a Labor seat. My constituents don’t pick people who don’t have contact.” – Penny Mordaunt.

“We have left the EU, the public is tired of us whining about Brexit.” – Kemi Badenoch.

“No to a general election, we need 100% of all our efforts to help the people of Britain. I am the person who can do that.” – Liz Truss.

“What do you regret most, being a Remainer or a Liberal Democrat?” – Rishi Sunak v Liz Truss.
