Latest news

Ben White has left the England squad for personal reasons and will miss the rest of the World Cup.

The Arsenal centre-back missed Monday’s Group B victory over Wales through illness after coming on as an unused substitute against Iran and the US.

“Ben White has left England’s training base in Al Wakrah and has returned home for personal reasons,” the Football Association said in a statement.

“The Arsenal defender is not expected to return to the squad for the rest of the tournament. We ask that the player’s privacy be respected at this time.”

White has been rewarded for his form amongst the Premier League leaders this season with a place in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for Qatar, with his versatility as a right-back and centre-back making him a useful addition to the squad.

It was in March when he played against Ivory Coast and was shifted to right-back during the match, which was his last cap for England.

After arriving in Doha, he shared how he enjoyed taking the next step from loans in the lower leagues during his time at Brighton, going on to play regularly in the top flight and earning a move to Arsenal.

“I think it’s something that has continued throughout my career. I believe in myself. I’ve worked hard to get here. I don’t think I did it the easy way. I think it’s just being consistent, believing in what I’m doing,” he said at the time.
