King Charles III will get his own James Bond story as a special gift for his coronation, with the famous spy now on Are Majesty’s Secret Service.
The coronation, which will take place on May 6 at Westminster abbeyis already marked with the first portrait of the new king unveiled earlier this week.
It has now been revealed that author and actor Charlie Higson has been commissioned to write a new 007 story to celebrate the King’s upcoming coronation.
Higson, 64, is the author of the Young Bond series, which follows Bond as a teenager at Eton College before he gets his license to kill.
The book was commissioned by Ian Fleming Publications and will be published on May 4, two days before the big event.
The book comes 60 years after the publication of James Bond creator Ian Fleming’s novel On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – the 10th in his series.
The new story will bring Bond back to the present, as he is tasked with thwarting a last-minute attempt to disrupt the ceremony.
Higson said: ‘Ian Fleming Publications came to me just over a month ago and I was delighted – until I realized it had to be ready for the coronation in May.’
He continued: “Writing it in such a short space of time was as thrilling and heartbreaking as any other Bond mission. Although, no one would actually shoot me.’
“I’ve been thinking about writing a Bond adventure for adults [for a while] – he burst out of me with both fists flying. It was all I could do to keep up with him and get his story down on paper.’
All royalties from sales of the book, titled On His Majesty’s Secret Service, go to support the National Literacy Trust.
Corinne Turner, managing director of Ian Fleming Publications, said: ‘The coronation of King Charles III is a momentous event for the country.
‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was first published [60 years ago]. What better way to mark this new chapter in history than with a brand new story: On His Majesty’s Secret Service?’
“We shared our thoughts with Charlie, and he was delighted to take on the challenge of writing a Bond adventure in time for publication in May.”
The new story will be available digitally from May 4 as an eBook, as an audiobook – read by Charlie Higson – and as a hardcover, online and in bookstores.
