One woman was tragically killed in the blast and a man is still in a “life-threatening” condition. Four others sustained minor injuries.

A bystander told how the explosion in Kingstanding, Birmingham – which “sounded like an earthquake” – could be heard “miles away”.

But the gruesome scenes did not deter hero Callum Attwood, who bravely stormed the house to save his neighbors.

He retrieved one victim from the inferno but was unable to rescue a second.

He told the Sun: “I’m just glad we took the one man out. He said his partner was still inside.

“We tried to reach her, but the flames and heat were too much and the fire brigade started doing their job.”

Callum – who miraculously sustained no injuries in the fire – added: “I live a few roads away from where it happened.

“I heard it from my house and could see the smoke.

“The flames were very high and people said there were people in the backyard and people in the house.

“I then ran into the backyard of next door’s house and jumped over to see another group of boys all moving bricks and trying to lift the second floor of the house. The man was trapped underneath.

In a statement, the West Midlands Ambulance Service said a man had been helped off the property by hero neighbors at the scene.

Firefighters stressed he suffered “very serious injuries”.

He is being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

The blast was reportedly heard thousands of times – with locals claiming their homes had been “ripped off” by it.

Callum was described by his cousin Reece on Twitter as a “hero”.

Reece praised his “bravery and courage” after helping those affected.

He wrote on Twitter: “What happened tonight in Kingstanding is devastating … my cousin saved a life! He’s a hero. I’m so proud of him.

Let this spread on Twitter!

“His actions, bravery and courage to do what someone else would not do and endanger his own life to save a life! Hero CALLUM ATTWOOD.”

The text was followed by a heart emoji.
