‘I’ll be by her side every step of the way’: Kite Runner author Khaled Hosseini reveals his ‘strong and fearless’ daughter Haris has come out as transgender

Bestselling author Khaled Hosseini has revealed that his ‘strong and fearless’ daughter Haris has come out as transgender†
Hosseini, who wrote the bestsellers Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, said he would be by his 21-year-old daughter’s side “every step of the way.”
The Afghan-American author shared images of Haris as a little boy and after her transition, she says ‘never been so proud of her’.
Hosseini said he has seen firsthand how complicated transitions are — emotionally, physically, socially and psychologically — and added that Haris has met every challenge with “grace, patience and wisdom.”

Hosseini wrote on Instagram: “Yesterday my twenty-one-year-old daughter Haris was born as transgender.
“I’ve known Haris’ journey since last year and I’ve seen her navigate some very difficult personal times. Switching is such a complex undertaking – emotionally, physically, socially, psychologically – but Haris has met every challenge with grace, patience and wisdom.’
Hosseini added: “As a father, I have never been so proud of her. I’m glad I now have not one but two beautiful daughters.’
Hosseini has two children – Haris and daughter Farah – with his wife Roya Hosseini.
The author added: ‘I am particularly inspired by Haris’ fearlessness, her courage to share her true self with the world. She taught me and our family so much about courage, about truth. About what it means to live authentically.
“I know this process was painful for her, filled with grief and fear. She is sober to the atrocities transgender people are exposed to on a daily basis. But she is strong and fearless.”

He continued: ‘I love my daughter. I will be by her side every step of the way, as will our family. We stand behind her. It is a privilege to see her enter the world as the beautiful, wise and brilliant woman that she is. May God bless her.’
Haris studied political science and human rights at Columbia University and at school in San José, California, she was the lead organizer of the 2018 Youth Climate Action Summit.
In school, Haris studied gender roles and new ideas in modern gender studies, especially the idea of toxic masculinity, according to the International Congress of Youth Voices.
