Kiwi country music star John Grenell dies

One of New Zealand’s best-known country singers, Otago-born John Grenell, has died aged 78.

A relative confirmed to RNZ that Grenell, who made his name as John Hore, had died, but could not provide further details.

His former wife and lifelong friend Deirdre Lusby said: “John passed away peacefully last night from a heart attack, aged 78. The family asks for privacy and plans a personal farewell to John. A public farewell with a musical celebration of his life will be held at a future date.”

Born in Ranfurly, Grenell had a number 1 hit in the 1990s with the song by Jim Reeves Welcome to our world.

The song was featured nationally in a Toyota vehicle TV advertising campaign.

He also had a big hit with the song I’ve been everywhere which was adapted to provide many place names in New Zealand.

He has performed in several countries and has won multiple country music awards.

Country singer Brendan Dugan spoke to RNZ about his former contemporary.

He told Jesse Mulligan that Grenell was someone special and the pair became good friends. He said Grenell at one point surpassed the Beatles in New Zealand.

“He had one of those voices that no one else had. A very special voice. Lots of shows, lots of fun, very enjoyable times.”

Dugan recalled that Grenell had been unwell three years ago, but got up and sang a few songs at a concert Dugan gave in Christchurch.

He said Grenell was a shy man who could have been more successful on the international stage, but he was happiest at home on his farm.

“He will be sorely missed, especially in our industry… He was just a great guy, great voice.”
