Kiwi rider Niamh Fisher-Black breaks collarbone in first race since Commonwealth Games

Niamh Fisher-Black’s Tour of Scandinavia came to a sudden halt after breaking a collarbone in a birthday crash in her first race since the Commonwealth Games.

The Nelson rider turned 22 on Friday (Saturday NZ time) – the day of the crash on the 127.7km fourth stage from Askim to Mysen in Norway.

Her SD Worx team posted a message on social media saying that Fisher-Black “had a minor fracture at the end of her collarbone” and would not start in the fifth leg.

She would “focus on her rehabilitation now.”

Fisher-Black reposted the team message, with a single word: “Expletives.”

She finished 17th in the women’s road race at the Commonwealth Games last week and the Scandinavia race – which takes in Denmark, Norway and Sweden – was her first outing since then.

Fisher-Black went through the middle of the pack with her teammate Anna Shackley, Arianna Fidanza (Team BikeExchange-Jayco) and Justine Ghekiere (Plantura-Pura) just outside the 3km mark, meaning the “crashed riders did not get the time of the group they were in at the time.”

Fisher-Black was the best young rider and fifth-placed cyclist overall at the 2021 Giro D’Italia Donne.

SD Worx, a Dutch women’s cycling team, reported that Shackley and another team member, Demi Vollering, would also not start the fifth stage as a precaution after serious falls.
