TL;DR
- An extensive firmware leak has really revealed everything about the Nothing Phone 1.
- Previously unknown camera specs and features have also been leaked.
- The firmware also reveals details about the Phone 1 manufacturer.
Carl Pei’s Nothing is all set to launch its first smartphone – the Nothing Phone 1 – a brown color online event scheduled for 4pm BST (11AM ET) today. However, a last minute leak by developer Kuba Wojciechowski on Twitter has left absolutely nothing to the imagination.
The developer claims to have access to the phone’s firmware and reveal details down to the tiniest features. The firmware also states that the Nothing Phone 1 is made by BYD Electronics, a Chinese ODM (Original Design Manufacturer). ODMs are responsible for designing and manufacturing devices sold under the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) brand name. In this case, that’s nothing.
The premiere of Nothing Phone (1) is tomorrow. The full specs and features of their most overhyped product to date will finally be revealed. You don’t have to wait though – I received the firmware and discovered everything there is to know!
Wojciechowski points out that the phone’s software was also partly designed by BYD Electronics, so the device contains many generic Chinese apps. For example, the firmware reveals that the 400MB camera app on the Nothing Phone 1 is a custom third-party app that includes configurations from other Chinese manufacturers. It should support HDR photos, some beauty modes, panorama, bokeh, macro, time-lapse, simple filters and an expert mode.
The game mode on the phone also seems to be a third-party solution and contains many references to Chinese apps and some strings corresponding to some Meizu devices.
However, we can only assess the software when we have the phone in our hands. The tipster points out that the phone 1 will not run anything on OS 1 based on Android 12. The phone’s wallpapers have also been leaked and are now available for download†
Nothing Phone 1 specifications and availability
In terms of hardware, the leak confirms details that have been around for a while. Phone 1 is expected to feature the Snapdragon 778G Plus chipset and a 120Hz FHD+ AMOLED display. The firmware tells us that the device will have a primary 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide Samsung JN1 sensor, and a 16MP Sony IMX471 selfie shooter.
