Lily Allen reveals she had an abortion while commenting on Roe v Wade ruling

Lily Allen revealed that she had an abortion when she was the Roe v. Wade ruling that allowed individual U.S. states to decide whether the termination of pregnancy should be illegal.

After the Supreme Court voted to remove the landmark Roe v. Wade decided, there was an intense setback from around the world, with an outpouring of women sharing their own experiences regarding their reproductive health.

In a candid Instagram post on Thursday, Lily, 37, revealed that she also had an abortion in the past, but called on women to stop feeling like they have to make their decisions to end a pregnancy ‘justify’.

Lily – who shares daughters Marnie (8) and Ethel (9) with ex-husband Sam Cooper – wrote: ‘I wish people would stop posting examples of exceptional reasons for abortions.

‘Most people I know, myself included, just did not want a nagging baby and that’s reason enough. We do not have to justify it.

“It need not be said, and I think all these examples play only in the hands of the bad people.”

Lily, who married and revealed to her second husband, David Harbor, in 2020 when the couple planned to expand their family, did not disclose when she had her termination.

In 2008, Lilly had a miscarriage with then-partner Ed Simmons of the Chemical Brothers.

Two years later, Lily tried to have a baby with her then-husband Sam, but lost her baby at six months pregnant and was left to fight for her life due to blood poisoning.

Speaking about the ordeal, she said: ‘I almost died. But I was so numb and I did not care. I just lost my baby and that’s how numb I was. ‘

Lily, who was rushed to hospital with septicemia, admitted: ‘This is something I have not dealt with yet. I’ll never get over it. I handled it, you know as one with it. But this is not something you overcome.

“I held my child and it was really awful and painful – one of the hardest things that can happen to a human being.”

After a successful operation, Lily was able to physically recover and continued to have her two daughters.

The American singer Olivia (19) went to The Other Stage at Worthy Farm where she said she was ‘crushed and terrified’ by the ruling that ended the constitutional right to abortion in the USA, which means that individual states can decide whether abortion can be made illegal.

She said: ‘I am devastated and terrified [by the ruling] and so many women and girls are dying because of this and I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who showed us at the end of the day they really do not care so much about freedom. ‘

After her words elicited great applause from the audience, Olivia went on to address the Supreme Court justices individually, saying, “This song goes out to Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh.”

Lily was seen giving the middle finger as she stood on the stage, before saying, “We hate you!” while the couple started the song full of words.

The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protection for abortion that has been in place for almost 50 years by deciding to reverse the 1973 Roe v Wade landmark decision and return the power to individual states to decide whether to allow the procedure or not.

The judges found that the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that allowed abortions to be performed before a fetus outside the womb would be viable – between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy – was wrongly decided because the U.S. Constitution makes no specific mention of abortion rights.

The ruling means that individual states now have the power to decide whether abortion should be banned. The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice research group, said 26 states are ‘sure or likely’ to ban abortion now.

The decision means that women with unwanted pregnancies in large parts of America will now have the choice to travel to another state where the procedure remains legal and available, buy abortion pills online or have a potentially dangerous illegal abortion.

President Joe Biden said in a speech in the White House that it was “a sad day for the court and the country” and upheld the Supreme Court’s decision to Roe v. Wade – and making illegal terminations for millions of American women – ‘wrong, extreme and out of touch’.

Biden accused the court of “explicitly taking away a constitutional right that is so fundamental to so many Americans,” and promised that the fight over abortion rights “is not over” and said his administration would do everything in its power to make efforts to restrict women from traveling to other states to get abortions.
