The knockout rounds beckon for the New Zealand men’s and women’s rugby sevens in Birmingham, as the medal prospects continue in the pool and velodrome on day two of the competition.
Sarah Hirini’s Black Ferns Sevens, and their male counterparts led by Sam Dickson, will both face England in their final group matches on Saturday, who will decide their opponents later in the evening. Both teams had a comfortable walk through the first day.
The women’s semi-finals will begin at 6:42 a.m. (NZT) on Sunday and the men’s quarter-finals at 7:26 a.m., before the medals are contested early on Monday (NZT).
By the pool, New Zealand’s top performing swimmer Lewis Clareburt watches his specialist 400m individual medley (heats at 10:37pm, finals at 7:49am), where he will go twice as much as his bronze four years ago.
At the London Velodrome, the gold medal winning men’s team chasers and women’s team sprinters back up in the individual events with real medal opportunities, while the speedy Bryony Botha is a leading contender in the women’s individual pursuit.
Captain Sophie Devine and her White Ferns play their first match at the inaugural women’s cricket appearance at a Commonwealth Games, and it’s a tough game against South Africa. The Silver Ferns and Blacks Sticks women close out day two with what should be more one-sided group matches.
