Rio Ferdinand said Trent Alexander-Arnold will ‘go down as one of the best right-backs we’ve ever seen’ and ‘break all records’ after playing in Liverpool Champions League victory over Rangers.

Liverpool recorded a confidence-inspiring victory at Anfield on Tuesday evening thanks to goals from Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

Alexander-Arnold, who has been criticized this season, gave Liverpool an early lead after beating Allan McGregor from 25 yards with a stunning free kick.

Salah stopped the game shortly after half-time with an emphatic penalty after Luis Diaz was knocked down in the penalty area.

Liverpool have now amassed six points from their three Champions League matches this season, although Napoli remain at the top of Group A with nine points after beating Ajax 6-1 tonight.

Manchester United legend Ferdinand touted Alexander-Arnold for credit after Liverpool’s much-needed win over Rangers.

He told BT Sport: “Listen, he will go down in history as one of the best right-backs we’ve ever seen in England. He is going to break all records in assists and goals [from a right-back].

‘He and [Chelsea star] Reece James will remain close to each other throughout their careers.

“I’ve had some time with Trent and one thing he doesn’t lack is character and personality. This kid wants to be the best, he asks the right questions about winning and maintaining performance at the top.

“He has a taste for winning at Liverpool, he won’t let that pass.”

Liverpool have struggled for form this season, winning just two of their seven league games to slip to ninth in the English top tier.

But Ferdinand was impressed by the Reds’ performance against the Scottish giants Rangers, adding: “Back to what we know, what we normally see, of a Liverpool team.

“The energy, the intensity, aggressive, on the front foot, high and early trying to win the ball. All those things played out today.

“You can see from the reaction of the manager, of the players, they wanted that, they needed that.

“The manager got everything he wanted from this game: a clean sheet, a few goals and a team that looked like they had confidence back.”

Klopp also praised his side after they won their second Champions League game of the season.

“It was exactly what we needed tonight,” the German boss said. ‘A new formation, we had to change things.

“We’ve had plenty of chances, imagine if we’d taken more. But a very good game and a very important win.

‘We were unlucky offensively at times, defensively very strong, except for the end. But next week it will be a different game [when Liverpool visit Rangers].’
