The Foreign Secretary addressed MPs from the Foreign Affairs Committee, where she warned that foreign policy should be about spreading British interests and supporting freedom against China. But when asked for suggestions from Macron that the UK would contact the EU again on foreign affairs less than two years after Brexit, she replied: “Not true!”
However, she warned that the largest economies, not just in Europe, need to do more after their meeting last week in Germany.
She said: “I want the G7 to act as an economic NATO, not only Russia’s challenge, but China’s challenge as well.”
She continued: “What we need is a network of freedom around the world with both NATO and the G7.”
Ms Truss insisted that she “foreseen no problems” with France in including Russia and China, despite President Macron recently proposing a compromise with Vladimir Putin.
And the foreign minister revealed that she will meet her French counterpart next week for talks on Ukraine and Britain’s general relationship with its closest neighbour.
