Liz Truss told to swing behind REAL Brexiteer Penny Mordaunt | Politics | News

Liz Truss was brought on the scene for her previous support for Remain in the Brexit referendum when she was challenged over her bid to take over Boris Johnson at number 10. In particular, the foreign minister supported the campaign to remain in the European Union in 2016, a move some have suggested could hinder her efforts. Speaking to her “Liz for Leader”, ITV correspondent Anushka Asthana horrified her voting behavior before suggesting that Ms Truss should “chase” Penny Mordaunt, who voted to leave the European Union, to ensure “party unity”.

Ms Asthana said: “Elizabeth Truss, you voted to stay, and you stayed in cabinet when the tax hikes came.

“Penny Mordaunt supported Brexit from the start. Some say she is the real candidate from the right.

“Given that analysts say she’s going to beat you, wouldn’t it be right for party unity to swing after her?”

To a chorus of supportive Conservative MPs, Ms Truss said: “Well, since the referendum in 2016 I have done so much to deliver on the promises of Brexit.”
