Lord Frost urges Kemi Badenoch to step down for Liz Truss

On Thursday evening she argued that Mrs Truss was now the best placed candidate to beat Labour, telling The Telegraph: “Liz will win us the next election.

“She is the best person to deliver on the opportunities of Brexit, will deliver a conservative agenda for the economy, defend freedom of expression, champion equal opportunities and take a strong stance on illegal immigration.”

As an added incentive for Ms Truss, the entire 60-strong European research group of Conservative MPs was told by its chairman Mark Francois on Thursday evening to vote for the foreign secretary.

In a letter seen by The Telegraph, Mr Francois – who has already declared himself for Mrs Truss – pointed out that the group had agreed to support either Mrs Braverman or Mrs Truss as leader.

He said at a meeting of the ERG on Wednesday, “we agreed overwhelmingly that there were two candidates that we felt stood out from all the others, namely Suella Braverman and Liz Truss.

“While almost all members of the group supported one or the other, we also collectively agreed that if only one advanced to the next round, we would row behind that candidate, whoever that may be.”

He added that “as a result” of Ms Braverman supporting Ms Truss “and as previously agreed – I hope that all our group will now be able to unite firmly behind Liz, to help realize the essential Northern Ireland protocol law, the opportunities that Brexit offers and secure the future of the Conservative Party”.
