Marvel’s latest superhero offerings, Thor: Love and thunderbegan his North American theater box office running with maybe $29 million in previews.
Disney and Marvel The film is a direct sequel to Thor: Ragnorak — both were directed by maverick filmmaker Taika Waititi — and is the fourth entry in the Thor independent franchise. It is also the 29th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe empire of titles.
The movie reunited Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, while franchise newcomers include Christian Bale. The cast also includes Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Waititi and Russell Crowe.
Tracking suggests the superhero photo will score the second-best opening of the pandemic era at $150 million or more domestically and possibly north of $300 million globally. last Dec, Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $50 million in previews for a $260 million domestic launch (in recent days, the Sony and Marvel picture have crossed $1.9 billion worldwide).
Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to contribute to the summer cash register boom.
Through July 4, 2022 domestic revenues were an estimated $3.9 billion, according to Comscore. That’s nearly 250 percent more than in 2021, but 32 percent lower than in 2019. Summer sales through July 4 were $1.96 billion, nearly 200 percent more than the same period in 2021 and just 15 percent lower than in 2019. .
