Liz Trusscurrently vying to become the next prime minister has admitted she is “absolutely shocked” by Love Island.
Love Island’s 2022 series has experienced quite a bit of controversy, with thousands of people complaining about ofcom amid misogyny allegations and fans accusing islanders of “bullying.”
ITV has consistently pointed to his duty of care protocols in response to the complaints, with broadcaster chief Kevin Lygo confirming that they sit down and judge Love Island after the current series ends.
Last night, Truss and Rishi Sunak – who are battling it out to become the next Conservative leader – were questioned by LBC’s Nick Ferrari in Leeds ahead of the first Tory leadership talks.
While speaking one-on-one with Ferrari, Truss was asked about her opinion on Love Island, given the recent spate of complaints about the program, and she didn’t refrain from sharing her candid opinion, despite her dissent. teenage daughter.
‘A handful of yes/no questions, a short response, a short reason if you like. For those people who have complained, Love Island is misogynistic, bullying and must be kept in check, isn’t it?’ said Ferrari.
In response, Secretary of State Truss said, “Well, all I can say is I watched it for 10 minutes with my teenage daughter and I was completely shocked and turned it off.”
“Was your daughter shocked for a moment?” the radio host asked.
Referring to one of the two daughters she shares with husband Hugh O’Leary, Truss replied, “Unfortunately not, and I’m quite concerned she went to see it on her own. But she’s really in the audience, so she won’t embarrass her anymore.”
In the past two weeks, more than 5,000 viewers have contacted media watchdog Ofcom to complain about Love Island.
Many of the complaints related to ‘alleged misogynistic behaviour’ by some of the male islanders in the villa, of which the most recent be assessed against the broadcasting rules of the regulatory authority.
During a media briefing for ITV’s interim financial results, Lygo said he is “very happy” with “how well” the series had performed.
When asked about the complaints and whether there would be an editorial review, he said: “We’re constantly reviewing a program as it is, because it’s one of those weird, live-style shows every night.
“But when the series ends on Monday, we always sit down and see what we think about it, what the reaction has been, how well it has performed.”
He added: “And we have to say that this year, remember, it’s the best we’ve had in many years and I think everyone is really enjoying it.”
Lygo said that while it’s “extraordinary” to attract five million viewers to watch a show in the evenings “in the modern age,” they should “always improve and work on what we’ve done.”
Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
