If you don’t already have a trench coat in your wardrobe, this is your prompt to buy one.

A trench coat is one of those style perennials that you will reach for again and again. Just ask Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca or Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

A few brands claim to have invented the trench coat (Burberry is the most famous), but the style has its roots in World War I British military clothing.

Traditionally, trench coats are double-breasted with 10 buttons in the front, wide lapels and usually a storm flap in the front. The jacket is belted at the waist and has sleeves ending in cuff straps around the wrists that are also buckled for superior protection against water.

Originally made of sturdy fabric (usually tightly woven gabardine coated with lanolin for waterproofing), today many versions are cut from more wearable, lighter cotton and polyester.

Trench coats are a fashion favorite because of the everyday versatility they offer. Trench coats are a staple of seasonal dressing – roomy enough to layer over wool layers in winter, yet durable enough to wear as a raincoat during the unpredictable spring months. Plus, they’re chic!

Most designers and stores will offer their own version of this style classic, meaning options are available at every price point depending on manufacture and functionality.

Burberry ‘Chelsea’ trench, about $3622

It doesn’t get more classic luxury than a Burberry trench coat.

Crafted from rugged, water-resistant gabardine, this exemplary style has that classic double-breasted silhouette complete with epaulettes, a storm flap and is lined with Burberry’s checked twill. Leather cuff buckles, a D-ring belt and buffalo horn buttons round off the quality trim.

luxury

Karen Walker ‘Magmatic’ Long Trench, $825

The trench coat has been a staple of Karen Walker for a long time. Made from a nice mid-weight wool flannel, this version has a slightly longer length than the average trench coat – hemmed to finish just above the ankle (AKA puddle grazing length).

Also great is the thick belt to tie the waist and create some structure. This one comes in navy blue or ecru (pictured), both of which are a slightly more chic alternative to the standard khaki.

mid range

Trenery ‘Honey’ Trench, $449

The Trenery fully lined trench coat comes in a soft yet sturdy double cotton cloth. Good for shorter people, it’s cut to hit knee-length with a slightly A-line silhouette. They recommend sizing up if you want to wear over thicker knit.

Affordable

M&S Collection doublebreasted trench coat, $139

This easy-to-wear option combines quality and affordability. Made from recycled polyester, it has all the cue markings of a classic trench coat: a traditional double-breasted front, belted waist, shoulder epaulettes and storm flaps.
