A HUSBAND pleaded guilty to murdering his wife when he hit her in a car for their young child in April.
Shawn Christopher Sturgeon38, accepted charges of one count of criminal manslaughter or car murder and one count of domestic violence in the presence of a child.
Sturgeon and his wife, Charlotte Sturgeon, 29, got into a fight while at the Salt Lake City International Airport in April with their young child.
According to court documents, the family had just returned from vacation.
Surveillance of the incident appears to show Charlotte walking to the passenger side of their car and opening the door before Sturgeon began to reverse the vehicle. Fox13 reported.
Charlotte lost her balance when Sturgeon suddenly stopped the car.
As he backed up, he hit the accelerator. Meanwhile, she was dragged and fell under their car.
Court documents claim that Sturgeon then lined up the car and moved over Charlotte’s body.
Officers who arrived at the scene told Fox that he “smelled strongly of alcohol and had glassy, bloodshot eyes”.
Police allege that Sturgeon told them, “I ran over my wife,” “I killed my wife,” and “I accidentally ran her over.”
A witness claimed that Sturgeon hit Charlotte while she was yelling and screaming.
Sturgeon is said to have yelled: “Now I have to take you to the emergency room,” said the witness.
After allegedly beating his wife, he drove himself and his wife to the airport garage pay booth to ask for help.
Charlotte died of her injuries after being taken to hospital.
Salt Lake City police officers say Shawn made “several candid statements that he ‘run over my wife’, ‘killed my wife’ and ‘I accidentally ran her over'” KSL reported.
After allegedly beating his wife, Shawn drove himself and his wife to the airport garage pay booth to request help for his seriously injured wife.
“Shortly after the crash, Sturgeon drove the vehicle, with his wife seriously injured in it, to the parking meters at the airport where he asked for help,” the Salt Lake City Police Department said. said in a statement. “This incident happened shortly after the couple returned to SLC from a vacation.”
Police said Sturgeon’s blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit at the time of the incident.
His sentencing is scheduled for September.
