A MAN has been arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping of a child after an adult saw the child pick up the child from the supermarket.
Sergejus Paskevicius, 59, of Heywood in Rochdale, will appear in court today on charges of attempted child abduction.
CCTV footage shows a man, who police say is Mr. Paskevicius, standing in the luggage compartment of the Heywood Aldi, apparently trying to talk to a child at 5:45 p.m. on July 23.
After apparently trying to talk to the child, the man appeared in the CCTV video to pick up the child and walk out of the store.
The video has been shared online but cannot be released by The Sun due to legal reasons.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: “We have filed charges against a 59-year-old man following an initial report of an attempted kidnapping of a child from a shop in Heywood a week ago.”
“Sergejus Paskevicius, of Heywood, has been remanded in custody and will appear in court today (July 30) in Manchester and Salford, charged with child abduction following an investigation by our detectives at Rochdale CID along with our local police officers.”
“The charges relate to an alleged incident involving a man and child on Saturday afternoon (July 23) at Aldi on Bradshaw Street.”
The statement concluded: “We thank the public for their response and patience as we conduct our investigations this week, and remind them not to share any information or images online that risk harming this case.”
When Aldi was approached for comment, he told The Sun that it was an ongoing police matter and therefore it would not be appropriate for them to comment at this time.
