A man was arrested this afternoon after attempting to scale the railing of Leinster House in an attempt to remove the Palestinian flag.
Ireland formally recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday, in partnership with Norway and Spain.
The Palestinian flag flew over Leinster House and four hours were set aside in the Dail to hear the TDs' statements.
At around 6pm a man was spotted by gardaí climbing the railing into the grounds of Leinster House near Merrion Square.
Asked about the intruder who was apprehended during the burglary of the building, a spokeswoman for the Houses of the Oireachtas said: “We do not comment on security matters.”
A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí arrested a man in his 50s near Merrion Street in Dublin earlier this afternoon.
“He is currently being held in a Garda station in Dublin.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Simon Harris said there was a job for every country and for the European Union to “use every lever at our disposal” to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza.
“I welcome the decision of the Belgian presidency to convene a meeting on the EU-Israel Association Agreement,” he said.
“The human rights clauses in that agreement are and must have meaning and if they are not respected there must be consequences.
He added: “Formal recognition of the State of Palestine here today is an act of powerful political and symbolic value. I hope it sends a message of hope to the Palestinian people that Ireland is standing by them in this darkest hour.
