A man whose car was caught driving at 174km/h on Dunedin's Southern Motorway says he was not behind the wheel at the time.

Dunedin Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said while police had a speed camera parked in Abbotsford's driveway on Friday, the cameraman captured the driver of a vehicle, believed to be a 34-year-old man, traveling at a speed of 151km/h in a southbound drove towards. track between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

The driver of the vehicle then turned around and drove north along the highway, where he was stopped again, this time traveling at 110 mph (174 km/h).

The cameraman radioed the details to police who were searching for the vehicle.

They found the man on South Rd at 9pm and stopped him at a petrol station in Princes St.

The driver of the vehicle, who was carrying two passengers, denied he was speeding and told police he was not traveling along the Southern Freeway at that time.

He underwent breath testing procedures and recorded a breath alcohol level of 351 mcg and was issued an offense notice.

Police were waiting for footage from the speed camera to determine who was driving the car at the time.

The usual penalty for excessive speeding is automatic loss of driving license for 28 days.
