Manchester United have finally reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Frenkie de Jong, but the deal could still fail if the Dutch midfielder considers turning down the move.

Erik ten Hag, appointed manager of United in April, worked with De Jong at Ajax and has made the 25-year-old one of his top goals this summer.

United have been in talks with Barça for several weeks and struggled to agree a fee with the Spanish giants, who are open to selling De Jong, but only at a price they see fit.

Given Barcelona’s demands, it looked like the move could stall, but according to Fabrizio RomanoManchester United have now made a breakthrough in the negotiations.

It is alleged that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs on a transfer of 85 million euros, with around £63 million to be paid up front and a further £10 million going to Barca in various add-ons.

While United appear to be closing a deal for De Jong, the transfer is far from over as the player still needs to be convinced that a transfer would be beneficial for his career.

De Jong has spent three enjoyable years at Barcelona and his priority would be to stay at the Nou Camp.

As a result, Manchester United have yet to agree personal terms with De Jong, who has previously admitted he would like to stay at Barca.

But United still believe they can convince De Jong to make the switch and reunite with Ten Hag, who he loved to play under when he was in the Netherlands.
