Philippine journalist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa announced in a speech in Hawaii on Tuesday that the Philippine government is confirming an earlier order to shut down Rappler, the news website she co-founded and which has gained notoriety for reporting on the bloody assassination of President Rodrigo Duterte. crackdown on illegal drugs.

The Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission confirmed its earlier decision to revoke Rappler’s certificates of incorporation, Ressa said during a speech at the East-West Center in Honolulu.

“Part of the reason I didn’t get much sleep last night is because we essentially got a cease and desist order,” Ressa told the audience.

Last year, Ressa became the first Filipino and first working journalist in more than 80 years to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

She was a featured speaker at this week’s East-West Center international media conference.

While in Honolulu, Ressa learned of the warrant from Rappler’s attorneys. She said they plan to appeal.

“We’re not closing,” she said. “Well, I can’t say that.”

No announcements about the decision appeared on the Rappler of the Philippines Securities and Exchange websites for business hours in the Philippines, where it was already Wednesday.

The AP was unable to immediately reach Ressa in Honolulu.

She co-founded Rappler in 2012. The website is one of several news agencies critical of Duterte’s policies.

Since taking office in 2016, Duterte has openly criticized journalists who write unfavorable stories about him. He has been particularly vocal about critical coverage of his anti-drug campaign, which has killed thousands of suspects, mostly poor, and sparked international condemnation.

President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President-elect Sara Duterte — Duterte’s daughter — will take office on Thursday after taking landslide wins in last month’s election.

Ressa was convicted of libel and has remained out on bail as long as the case is on appeal.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines has revoked Rappler’s license over a violation of its prohibition on foreign ownership and control of media outlets.
