Jorge Sampaoli stunned Marseille on Friday by leaving the club a few weeks after the club’s return to the club Champions League.

The 62-year-old led OM to an impressive second place in Ligue 1 last season, but walked away amid a disagreement over the club’s transfer strategy.

According to CBS Sports reporter, Ben Jacobsthe Argentine in particular felt that his bosses should have done more to retain the services of William Saliba on a permanent agreement.

The 21-year-old was sent out on loan by Arsenal last summer and played a crucial role in Marseille’s successful campaign, culminating in the center-half winning the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award.

Saliba also won his first senior international match and now looks set to finally start his Gunners career, three years after initially joining a £ 27.5m move from Saint Etienne.

It is also reported that Sampaoli was disappointed that Marseille failed to sign the experienced Belgian international Axel Witsel and that he should have fought harder to retain the new Aston Villa, Boubacar Kamara.

After Sampaoli’s departure, Marseille released a statement which read: ‘We would like to sincerely and heartily thank Jorge Sampaoli for his work.

‘After 16 months of collaboration, this work has enabled the club to take a step forward in building its new sports project and to qualify directly for the Champions League.

“We are pleased with the progress that has been made and the emotions that are being experienced together, but after a long reflection, the two parties, acting in the interest of the Marseille project, have agreed to put an end to this stage. ‘
