Meghan Markle and Prince Harry should be ‘congratulated’ on financial independence | Royal | News

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have kept their vows when they step down as senior working royals in 2020 that they would be financially independent. Bills unveiled by the Sovereign Grant show the Queen, Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are incurring huge expenses.

However, this is not the case for the Sussexes who now live in California and no longer receive money from the Prince of Wales.

A source close to Prince Charles said the Duke and Duchess “should be congratulated on achieving their goal” of making millions from the private sector.

Since stepping back as senior working royals, the Sussexes have signed several deals believed to be worth millions of dollars.

One deal is with Netflix, whom they hope to partner with to “create content that reports but also gives hope.”

While it’s not known how much the deal is worth, there are reports that it could be worth as much as $112 million.

One project is believed to include a documentary about the Invictus Games founded by the Duke.

Another is a children’s series about the adventures of a young girl named Pearl, with the Duchess as an executive producer.

The Sussexes have also signed a deal with Spotify, reportedly worth £30million.

“In addition, they value the ability to earn a professional income, which they are not allowed to do in the current structure.

“That is why they have made the choice to become financially independent members of the Royal House.

“Their Royal Highnesses believe that this new approach will enable them to continue to carry out their duties for Her Majesty The Queen, while having the future financial autonomy to work remotely.

“While The Sovereign Grant’s contribution covers only five percent of the expenses for The Duke and Duchess and is used specifically for their official office expenses, Their Royal Highnesses prefer to release this financial bond.

“As working members of the Royal Family, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to maximizing Her Majesty’s legacy, both in the UK and throughout the Commonwealth.”
