Due to a technical glitch, people will be able to park for free in Wellington on Thursday, but council parking attendants will still enforce time limits.

Wellington City Council said a technical glitch caused meters to think today was a public holiday. Parking is free in the city center on public holidays.

That means people can park in the CBD without paying and won’t get a ticket, but the municipality will still enforce time limits.

Council spokesman Richard McLean said that while parking was free, it did not mean it was “an opportunity to park for five to six hours”.

He also said contractors were working on the issue, but there was no estimated time it would be completed and the meters could be out of action for a few hours.
