Michael Owen has supported Manchester United to fail Anthony to 'surprise' the fans this season after a mixed start at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian arrived as one of Erik ten Hagbrought in a staggering £84.8million worth of top players from the club two seasons ago, but he has so far failed to deliver what he expected at United.
After scoring only once Eredivisie The 24-year-old midfielder had a defining season under Ten Hag last season, but Owen is confident the winger will impress in the current highly competitive environment.
“Antony's arrival hasn't gone well and although it doesn't seem like he's the answer for United, that's happened to so many players over the last 12 seasons,” the former United striker said. OLBG.
'Great players have come and it hasn't worked out for them. Look at Jadon Sancho for example, who played so well in the seasons leading up to the transfer.
“It's just a hard place to go. Even the big Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't revive Manchester United when he came back. I could talk about dozens of great players who arrived at United in the last 10 or 15 years and looked average.
'Sometimes they even go somewhere else and pick it up again and start doing well. I think it's quite dangerous to write off players like Antony, even though your eyes tell you that he doesn't seem to have the required speed and seems to lack a bit of confidence.
'It might be a tough season for him, but if Erik ten Hag gets the team on track, he might surprise you.'
However, not everyone is convinced Antony has the qualities to revive his career at United, with the former Red Devils centre-back. Jaap Stam stressed that the Brazilian is 'not good enough for this level'.
“I think Antony did well in the Netherlands and showed quality there, but if you go to another league and go to United with a big price tag, it's not the same,” Stam said on the William Hill podcast Up front with Simon Jordan.
'The club needs to bring in better players. With Antony, he's been there for almost two seasons and you can't keep saying that he'll be good eventually.
'When you bring in players who are worth that much money, they have to make a difference.
'Of course it will take a few games, but in the end they have to show their quality, by scoring goals and giving assists.'
