Military parents get free childcare to support family life

ilitarian parents will receive free childcare from September to help them enjoy a “flourishing family life” alongside their careers.

The Wraparound Childcare (WAC) scheme will be rolled out in the UK in the autumn after two years of trials.

It is open to eligible service families with children ages four to 11 and provides free childcare before and after school for up to 20 hours per week during the school term.

Waiting staff are expected to save around £3,000 per child each year, although the Department of Defense (MoD) recognized charges vary from country to country.

Open to more than 20,000 children, the scheme will provide a helping hand to families who need to find a new home and school when they move for work.

Minister of Defence Ben Wallace said: “Our armed forces sacrifice a lot in the service of their country and whether it be flexible work or housing options, I am determined that they feel supported in their family life.

“Providing free childcare is another clear way to support the unique challenges they face as parents and will go a long way in helping them enjoy a thriving family life and career.”

Corporal Vicki Taylor of the Royal Airforce said: “Everyone I’ve talked to who also benefits from childcare agrees it’s a fantastic plan.

“For my family, it saved us financially, lowered our stress levels and gave us more quality time with our kids.”
