Once again, a fan project has been shut down by a publisher after months of work, as Modern Warfare 2 remaster H2M-Mod is no more.
Video game fandom is always so incredibly passionate and creative, but it really needs a better understanding of copyright and IP law. There are dozens of examples of fan creations that have had a tremendous amount of work put into them, only to have been shut down by the company that owns the rights.
Nintendo is mostly known for forcing fans to give up projects, but they're not the only ones and this time it's Actionwhich forced the fans behind the H2M mod to cancel its release… one day before it was due to come out.
Maybe there's some obscure legal reason for this, but that happens a lot, and in this case the team that tried Call of duty: Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer is playable via Modern Warfare Remastered forced to abandon ship.
Modern Warfare Remastered was a remaster of the full-length classic Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare from 2007. It was very popular, but for some reason only the story campaign was remastered for Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 received no attention at all from Activision.
This means that the multiplayer for Modern Warfare 2 is currently very difficult to play. The fans wanted to do something about this through the H2M project.
It was also a very massive undertaking, featuring over 50 maps, a modernized progression system, and a range of new weapons, accessories, and camouflages not seen in the original version of the game.
Not only did the cancellation come just a day before the planned release, but it also came five hours after the game's release trailer. That may have been the reason for Activision's reaction, though.
“Today, our team members received a cease and desist order from Activision Publishing regarding the H2M Mod project. We are complying with this order and are immediately and permanently ceasing all operations,” is the team's only official statement.
While Activision has yet to publicly comment on the matter, the position of every publisher is that they must stop any unauthorized use of their intellectual property. Even if it seems harmless, they can’t just pick and choose, or their ability to stop something more malicious, from a legal standpoint, would be limited.
In this case, Activision would have been happy to see Modern Warfare Remastered rank so high in the sales charts in the lead-up to H2M, but on the other hand they wouldn't have been happy with the idea that it would take away attention and time from their heavily monetized official games.
It's all very unfortunate, but it is strange that fans keep doing this sort of thing and then act surprised when the same thing happens over and over again, ruining their fun.
