Money Launderer caught on the phone at Mountjoy Prison avoids extra prison time

A truck driver, who has been sentenced to eight years in prison for money laundering for a criminal organization, was spared extra imprisonment after being caught on the phone in his cell.

Two Paul Karyu, 45, who have an address at Saggart Court Lodge in Saggart, Dublin, pleaded guilty yesterday for possessing a smuggled cell phone in a cell at Mountjoy Prison.

The Dublin District Court heard that officers discovered it during an investigation on October 28, last year.

Garda Diadora Gil told Judge John King that the police had recovered “his little black cell phone.”

He had previously been convicted of five criminal charges, two of which were money laundering.

He was imprisoned for eight years on March 15, 2018. Garda Gil exhibited the phone in court, stating that it was “basic” and did not include history.

She accepted Carew’s help and did not get any further attention.

Attorney Luke Staines told the court that his client needed to stay in touch with his wife, worried that his sick relatives were hospitalized and needed constant treatment.

Gda Gill confirmed that Carew gave the same explanation when he was charged.

The judge heard that he was in the prison’s advancing unit, but the discovery of the phone led to a “blockade.”

The defense urged the judge not to extend his current sentence and to note that he pleaded guilty on the first occasion.
Judge King imposed a four-month consecutive term on the existing decision, but suspended the decision on the condition that he did not repeat the offense and maintained good behavior for two years from the date of his release. Legal assistance was given.

His previous accusations were for a term of eight years and a criminal return of € 600,000.
