Sean Buis, 28, from Dunedin, died on Thursday evening after the incident.
A police spokeswoman said in a statement that officers were continuing the investigation into the death in Eglinton Road, Mornington, around 7:30 p.m.
The death is now being treated as “suspicious”, the spokeswoman said.
Previously, police had treated the death as “inexplicable”.
The deposits on the spot were lifted on Saturday and a Otago Daily Times photographer who visited the scene yesterday said tire tracks in the grass were all that remained.
Now a large dedicated team continued to investigate information to determine what had happened.
“Police want to reassure the public that this incident is reportedly only for specific parties, and there is no reason to believe there is any lasting risk to the wider community,” the spokeswoman said.
Police have continued to support the man’s loved ones and are still calling on anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward, the spokeswoman said.
No arrests have been made following the death, police said yesterday.
Last week, police said officers were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Thursday after reports that a man had been attacked and then run over by a vehicle.
Police understood that a group of people was present before the victim’s death and were eager to talk to them.
The ODT understands that the police spoke to businesses in Eglinton Rd this weekend about CCTV footage they may have captured.
