Mother Machine is a cooperative roguelike coming to PC and consoles

Indie studio Maschinen-Mensch has revealed its latest game, called Mother Machine. The title is a co-op roguelike with platforming mechanics, where teams of up to four players must navigate a hostile environment with procedurally generated environments. The studio plans to release the game on PC (with support for Steam decks) and consoles, with a release date targeted sometime in the first quarter of 2025.

GamesBeat got a chance to preview Mother Machine in action: the player characters are cute, disgusting little chaos gremlins that spawn from the title character, a supercomputer left behind on a planet previously inhabited by humans. The Mother Machine sends the gremlins out to explore the planet, where they attempt to survive and learn more about their world and their “mother.” The gremlins’ abilities are enhanced with a series of mutations that allow players to customize their character.

According to the developers, Mother Machine was built with accessibility in mind — its procedurally generated areas allow players of varying experience levels to work together effectively. The game also features drop-in co-op play, meaning players can join each other’s games at any time.

Riad Djemli, CEO of Maschinen-Mensch, said in a statement: “At Maschinen-Mensch, creating games with innovative procedural gameplay is in our DNA. After the success of Curious Expedition 1 and 2, our team has grown to over 20 highly talented individuals. Now, we are excited to bring our unique approach to the action-RPG genre with our new IP, Mother Machine. We can't wait to share this new adventure with our community.”
