MYSTERY surrounds the death of a Brooklyn woman with dementia who was discovered in her home with horrific injuries.
An investigation is underway after police officers found 77-year-old Elenora Bernard swollen and covered in bruises after a possible assault.
The elderly woman was still alive when New York police officers entered her apartment shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday night.
After the police found her, they took her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Authorities said she had bruises on one of her eyes, part of her chest, ankle and calf. reported the New York Post.
One of her arms was broken and her hands were reportedly swollen, the media said.
Based on her injuries, authorities have said it appears that Bernard was attacked before she died.
However, the manner of death has not been determined.
According to a 63-year-old neighbor interviewed by the New York Post, a “young man” is said to have lived in the house with Bernard.
“None of us knew why she took him in,” the neighbor told media.
“She was funny, she always made us laugh.”
Bernard had reportedly lived in the house in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn for more than 30 years.
She has two children, including a son Khari Edwards, who was running for president of Brooklyn Borough in 2021, according to the Post.
Police say they are actively investigating the matter.
