“Napalm Girl” Phan Thi Kim Phuc underwent final surgery 50 years later | World | News

A famous photo of Kim Phuc Phan Thi running from an incendiary in the United States, severely burnt and naked, was used on the covers of newspapers around the world.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning photo by photographer Nick Ut became the definitive image of the Vietnam War overnight.

“I’m no longer a victim of war. I’m a friend and a helper. I’m a grandmother and now a peace-calling survivor,” said Kim, 59.

Her final surgery was done free of charge by Miami doctor Jill Weibel, and Kim, who emigrated to Canada 30 years ago, said no further treatment was needed.

Nick, 71, saved her life near her home in Trang Bang in 1972 by insisting that a doctor treat her when she said she would die.

They remain friends.
