Nasarawa records six cases of monkey pox

The state government of Nasarawa has confirmed that six cases of monkeypox have been registered in the state.

During a media briefing on Thursday, July 7, State Health Commissioner Pharm Ahmed Baba Yahaya . said four cases of Monkeypox were registered in Lafia and two cases in local government areas of Keffi state.

The disease mainly occurred in children, pregnant women and the immunocompromised.

Yahaya said;

“Four victims were discovered in Lafia while two were diagnosed in the state’s Keffi Local Government Area since the outbreak of the disease in the nation.

“Since the outbreak of the disease, no deaths have been recorded. Health professionals have been informed as a result of the occurrence of this disease. Training has also been provided, medicines and important goods for the treatment of the disease have been purchased.”

The health commissioner, who revealed that the illness usually lasts two to four weeks and is caused by fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, swollen lymph nodes and a rash that blisters and then scabs, urged citizens to avoid close contact with people with skin rashes suspected or confirmed to be monkey pox.

Yahaya added;

“Do not touch the rash or scabs. Kiss, hug, hug, or don’t* with someone suspected or confirmed to have monkey pox rash. Do not share eating utensils with someone who has monkey pox.”

The commissioner also announced that an Emergency Operational Center (EOC) for Monkeypox has been activated and an incident manager has been appointed.
