In this week’s episode of the AppleInsider Podcast, your hosts discuss new features in iOS 16 beta 2 like iCloud backup over cellular data, talk about AirPods Spatial Audio personalization, discuss why Stephen needs Passkey ASAP, and more !
The second developer beta for iOS 16 introduces the ability to perform iCloud backup via cellular and new dual SIM filters for Messages. A switch in iCloud backup settings enables mobile backup, but users should make sure they have a data plan that supports it.
Mail also saw an update in beta 2 with a certified mail system for verified addresses. Users see a logo instead of the default initials and a message stating that the email was delivered to a digitally certified standard. The standard, called Brand Indicators for Message Identification, or BIMI, is yet another step in reducing fraud by ensuring an email comes from a genuine source.
Apple will also allow users to bypass CAPTCHAS, those annoying “verify you’re not a robot” image pickers that almost always seem broken. Instead, the iPhone gives a secure handshake with the website to verify that the user is not a bot.
Speaking of internet security, Stephen has learned a hard lesson about passwords and he hopes Passkey arrives sooner or later. The hosts are discussing the future without passwords, or even logins, as biometrics plus local device authentication trumps the old email and password combination.
We also make updates to the iWork suite, discuss why iPadOS 16 is still not quite what users want, and how Apple’s social media strategy sometimes seems arbitrary.
