In a poll that ran from 10am Thursday 7th July to 2pm Friday 8th July, Express.co.uk asked: “Who do you want to see as the new Prime Minister?”

A total of 13,859 readers voted with Penny Mordaunt come out as the most popular candidate, with 26 percent (3,569 people) of the vote.
The next most popular candidates were Secretary of Defense Ben Wallace with 20 percent (2,726 people) and Secretary of State Liz Truss by 15 percent (2,061 people).
This was followed by Steve Baker in fourth place, with 11 percent (1,541 people).
In addition, the newly appointed Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, Michael Gove and Come on Patel each received one percent of the vote.
Another eight percent (1,138 people) answered “other”.
