New York City officials released a creepy explainer video telling residents what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.
New York City’s Department of Emergency Management released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) focused on nuclear preparedness Monday, detailing the three most important steps New Yorkers must take if the Big Apple is bombed: get in, stay in. and stay tuned.
The nerve-wracking video begins with virtual images of New York brownstones and apartment buildings as emergency sirens blare in the air.
A woman appears on the street and outlines what to do next: “So there has been a nuclear attack. Don’t ask me how or why, just know that the big one has struck.”
First, New Yorkers need to “go in fast”: “You, your friends, your family, get in.”
The PSA host says staying in a car is “not an option” and once people are inside they should get as far from the windows as possible.
The second step is to “stay in” and close all doors and windows.
If the building has a basement, people are urged to stay there, but if not, they should go as far as possible to the center of the building.
Anyone outside during the nuclear explosion should immediately undress and shower to get rid of the radioactive dust, the host says.
The third step — stay tuned — means New Yorkers should follow media and city warnings for information.
“Don’t go out until authorities say it’s safe,” the host warned.

The timing of the eerie warning isn’t clear, and there’s no evidence that it came in response to any specific threat or concern.
New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol simply says New Yorker should be prepared “as the threat landscape continues to evolve.”
“As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it’s important for New Yorkers to know that we are preparing for impending threats and providing them with the resources they need to stay safe and informed,” he said in a statement released by the PSA.
The city announcement says that “although the probability of a nuclear weapons incident in/near New York City is very low, it is important for New Yorkers to know the steps to stay safe.”
