Newcastle United have entered the battle to sign Marco Asensio from Real Madrid this summer, with Arsenal and AC Milan also interested, but Liverpool are not enthusiastic despite some reports.
The 26-year-old only has a one-year contract at the Bernabeu and no progress has been made in signing a new deal.
This is despite a decent season for Real Madrid last time, with 31 appearances in La Liga and 10 league goals, while appearing eight times in their league. Champions League winning campaign.
The versatile attacking midfielder is reportedly available for just £25million during this transfer window, a figure that has warned many potential candidates.
Arsenal have been linked with him for much of the summer, as has AC Milan, but Spanish publication AS is now reporting that Newcastle have plunged into the fray.
Liverpool and Manchester United have also been mentioned as possible destinations for the Spaniard, but appear to be far less enthusiastic than his other suitors.
Newcastle are likely to offer the Spain international huge wages but will not be able to offer Asensio the Europa League action that Arsenal can or the Champions League football that AC Milan will play next season.
There remains a chance Asensio could stay in Madrid as the club offered him a new contract earlier this year but he did not get the pay he was looking for, so he turned it down.
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said of him in April: “He is a footballer of extraordinary quality. He suffered a serious knee injury that meant he had to be out for a long time with a very slow recovery.
“He is an important player who has helped us a lot. I don’t know what’s going on with his future. I think he is talking to the club to extend his contract, but I can only speak about him from a technical perspective.”
