Newsnight: Grant Shapps ‘great choice’ to replace Boris as leadership race begins | UK | News

Courts suggested his boss would be a “great choice” to take on the position of Johnson, who stepped down as leader of the Conservative party on Thursday. Mr Shapps was appointed Transport Minister when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister in 2019.

When asked about the next leader, Mr Courts said: “Due to the challenges the country has as we are still pulling out of the pandemic and the cost of living issues.

“I think we need someone who has experience and someone who can campaign and deliver results.

“Someone like Grant Shapps, my boss, would be a good choice.

“I’ve seen him work up close and I think he did an excellent job.”

On Thursday, during his resignation speech, Johnson called his colleagues’ decision to oust him “eccentric,” suggesting they were driven by a herd mentality.

He said: “Over the past few days I have been trying to convince my colleagues that it would be eccentric to change governments when we deliver so much and when we have such a huge mandate and when really we are only a handful of points behind in the polls. .

“As we’ve seen at Westminster, the herd instinct is powerful, and when the herd moves, it moves.”

Johnson will remain in place until the party elects a new leader — a process the 1922 Committee hopes to complete as soon as possible.
