The final contenders will go head-to-head this weekend in a series of live TV debates, featuring Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss, Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat all compete to appeal to the public and stay in the contest. Former Chancellor Sunak came out on top after the second round of Tory MPs on Thursday 14 July with 101 votes.

This was followed by Commerce Secretary Ms Mordaunt with 83 votes and Secretary of State Ms Truss in third place with 64 votes.

Ms Badenoch received the support of 49 MPs and Mr Tugendhat received 32 votes, also over.

But Attorney General Suella Braverman was eliminated by just 27 votes.

The candidates will compete in a series of three live debates, the first of which will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Friday 15 July.

Channel 4 confirmed that all five candidates will take part in the debate.

Further television clashes are scheduled for Sunday on ITV and Monday evening Sky News’ Kay Burley will host a debate with questions from a live virtual audience.

Voting will continue until two contenders remain and the finalists are expected to be confirmed on Thursday, July 21.

The pair will face off in a summer meeting and 160,000 Conservative Party members will determine their fate in a postal vote.

The chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady, said a new prime minister would be announced on September 5.
