‘Not happy about it’: Businesses could be forced to relocate if flyover plan goes ahead

A company with purpose-built headquarters in Rolleston will face a need to relocate if the viaduct goes ahead as planned.

Christchurch RV Center office manager Allicia Beirne said under Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s new concept plan for the project, motorists pulling caravans coming off the viaduct may find it too cramped to become the caravan and motorhome entrance.

“We’re not happy about it, we don’t want to move, we haven’t been here for 12 months,” Beirne said.

A spokesperson for Waka Kotahi said it was in talks with Christchurch RV Center for alternative access options.

“One of the options currently being considered is to move their company to another location,” the spokesperson confirmed.

The road manager actively contacted the directly affected parties to allay their concerns about access to their sites.

Drummond and Etheridge Rolleston, which is located next to the Christchurch RV Centre, is also one of the companies concerned about the plan.

Branch manager Murray Chesterman said he was waiting for more details before commenting further.

However, some Jones Rd companies support the new plan.

MTF Finance franchise owner Dan Groundwater said traffic will continue to Jones Rd, while the original flyover plan released last year had suggested taking the traffic away.

U-Tow New Zealand spokesman Tony Walker said the new flyover could potentially bring more exposure to his company as it departs nearby.

James Caygill, Waka Kotahi’s director of regional relations, said the road authority was seeking feedback before July 22.

The $125 million project aims to improve highway links between the residential side of Rolleston and the industrial and business hubs and inner harbor zone of rail.

“Since last year’s public consultation, the team has re-examined ways to better connect Rolleston’s residential and industrial sides,” Caygill said.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton welcomed the changes.

He said the plan, in addition to safer ways to cross and connect Rolleston, gave people more travel choices.

“This project will improve travel opportunities, keep our people safe and help our district’s economy grow,” Broughton said.

Walk-in community consultations on the flyover plan will be held at:

  • July 2 – 1pm – 3:30pm at Rolleston Community Centre, 94 Rolleston Drive, Rolleston
  • July 8 – 11am-1:30am at Te Ara Ātea, 56 Tennyson St, Rolleston
  • July 17 – 11am-1:30am at Selwyn Aquatic Centre, 71 Broadlands Drive, Rolleston
