A 14-year-old tiger died at the zoo after being infected with the coronavirus and developed pneumonia.

Jupiter of the Amur tiger died on Sunday at the Columbus Zoo Aquarium in Ohio.

The tiger first began to get sick on June 22nd. He wasn’t interested in eating and didn’t want to stand, move, or interact with the zookeeper. The zoo was shared on Facebook on Wednesday.

“When this continued until the next day, Jupiter was anesthetized for testing and treatment. The first test suggested an infection and treatment began,” the zoo wrote. “Unfortunately, Jupiter did not improve with this treatment and hesitated to move and eat.”

The next day, Jupiter received more treatment and tests.

“He seemed stable, but Jupiter died overnight,” the zoo said.

Jupiter, who had been treated for a long time for the underlying chronic disease, was the first animal to die of Covid-19 at the zoo.

“As a precaution, staff dealing with cats, apes, and weasels (otters, wolverines, etc.) should wear masks when they are within 6 feet of these animals,” said the zoo. “These animals are susceptible to Covid-19 infection.”

Jupiter was born in Moscow Zoo in July 2007, spent some time at the Dvorklarove Zoo in the Czech Republic, and arrived at Columbus Zoo in March 2015.

He gave birth to nine Cubs, six of which were born in Columbus. Jupiter was friendly to the female tigers Mara and Natasha.

“Jupiter’s care team loves fish, sleeps in habitat caves, plays with cardboard boxes, and another favorite item, the 75-pound fire department’plus sign’that the keeper is heavy to move around. I remember it as a big and impressive tiger that interacted with. , “The zoo said,” But what he carried around as if it had no weight. “

Jupiter is the latest large cat to die in Covid-19. A 9-year-old lion died of the coronavirus in June 2021 after an outbreak at the Bandaroo Zoo in India.
