Old central terminal building at Dublin Airport is being used for Ukrainian refugees

The old central terminal building at Dublin Airport is being used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees after the state ran out of accommodation.

The DAA said it has made the unused terminal available to the Ministry of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth for Ukrainians to help with the shortage.

Due to overcrowding at the Citywest Hotel transit center in Dublin, new Ukrainian arrivals who have not provided alternative accommodation will be asked to stay overnight in the Dublin Airport terminal.

A spokesman for the airport authority said: “DAA has made the old central terminal building at Dublin Airport available to the Department of Children to help them facilitate the arrival of Ukrainian nationals in Ireland.

“All services offered within the building are provided by the department.”

The ministry said Ukrainians arriving in Ireland are their top priority, but with the lack of available accommodation it is an obvious struggle.

Ensuring the safety, health and safety of people fleeing Ukraine has been and remains a top priority for the government since the Russian attack began in February.

“Most of the people arriving in Ireland are women and children,” said a ministry spokesman.

“This effort will involve all relevant government departments and offices, local authorities, the armed forces and government agencies such as Tusla and the HSE.”

Asylum seekers from other countries also continue to seek refuge in Ireland through the International Protection Service.

“In recent weeks, the number of people seeking access to the International Protection Service (IPS) has increased very significantly, causing a serious shortage of available accommodation for both people coming from Ukraine and applicants for international protection.

“This is also causing overcrowding in the Citywest Transit Hub.”

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will meet with ministers today to discuss alternative housing arrangements.

The department said: “Incoming arrivals arriving at night will remain at Dublin Airport if they have no alternative accommodation.

“The government is working intensively to make alternative arrangements with immediate effect.

“The Taoiseach has a meeting with the relevant ministers today [Thursday] to discuss the situation and review current policies and processes.”
