REVIEW: One of 2021’s breakout shows is back — and as addictive as ever.

The misadventures of Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) continue as they try to investigate another death at their New York apartment complex – The Arconia.

But, like the second season of Only murders in the building (which begins streaming on Disney+ tonight, June 28), they are initially the prime suspects being questioned about the death of residents’ association president Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell).

Mabel claims she got back to her apartment just in time to hear Bunny’s last words when she succumbed to the multiple stab wounds.

However, one of the investigating officers believes her, Charles and Oliver’s accounts have “as many holes as their victim” and besides there is a motive – she wanted the trio out of the building because of the unwanted attention, stress and uproar their podcast on the murder of former roommate Tim Kono.

But with only circumstantial evidence – and no murder weapon – the Triumvirate is not held for long and, despite the warning to “find a new hobby”, Oliver is eager to record their attempts to clear their names. “It’s rare for a true crime podcast to make a sequel — we have a chance here.”

However, Mabel is not so sure – she wants “a life away from death” – and tries to chase the interest shown by local gallery owner Alice (Cara Delevingne) in her artwork, while Charles gets the chance to play his most famous part. revisited in a proposed reboot of his long-running detective series Brazzos.

Things change, though, when Amy Schumer, Arconia’s new celebrity resident, expresses a desire to make a limited series of their original show, high-profile podcaster Cindy Canning (Tina Fey) her real-time exposition of Our Threesome – Only Murderers in the Building. – unleashes. and both a work of art stolen from Bunny’s house and a bloody knife mysteriously appear in Charles’s apartment.

As it turned out during the first run, Only murders in the building is a witty, compelling, highly entertaining triumph whose delights lie in the details and character interactions.

And, as you’d hope from a Martin script, it bursts at the seams with witty bon mots, physical comedy potential and biting asides as our disparate trio spark, spar and try to solve even more mysteries – with hilarious results. .

The addition of Shumer, Delevingne and a riotous Shirley MacLaine to the mix adds a fair amount of extra spice, while there are enough twists, callbacks and unexpected interconnections to keep you on your toes.

While it’s a welcome reminder of the talents of both Short and Martin, it’s Gomez who is the revelation here, with emotional depth, perfect comedic timing and a succession of standout outfits. Mabel Mora has to be one of the most memorable stylish characters on TV right now.

That’s right, it’s not just Murders who make this brilliant show such a compulsive watch.
