2Africa cable system overview

The 2Africa Cable system, with a length of 45,000 km, will be the largest submarine cable system in the world. Once completed, it will connect more than 3 billion people in 33 countries on three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe, according to the official release.

The 2Africa consortium consists of Bayobab, center3, China Mobile International, Meta, Orange, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Group and WIOCC. Alcatel Submarine Networks takes care of the production and installation of the cable.

In Oman stressed the importance of the landing agreements for 2Africa and stated: “Following the previous landing of SMW-5 and TGN Gulf in Oman, the landing of the 2Africa cable represents a further step in our vision to be the neutral partner of choice for the countries of submarine cable systems and supporting Ooredoo will become a truly global player in connectivity in the coming years.”

Strategic landing sites

Ooredoo said the selected landing sites, Salalah and Barka, were strategically chosen, with Salalah emerging as the key submarine cable landing center in southern Oman. Ooredoo Oman will develop a completely new landing infrastructure at both locations, with a commitment to its maintenance in the coming decades.

“This new infrastructure will be completely different from any other submarine cable system currently landing in Oman, and will ensure robust connectivity and access for all operators in the country,” In Oman added.

Ooredoo is an international communications company operating in the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia, serving consumers and businesses in 10 countries.
